Reading as Exercise

Reading as an activity is kind of like exercise when you do it, you have to work up to a certain level of intensity. You cannot simply start hard from the beginning. If you’re starting to build a reading habit, get something that’s really easy to read really like it might feel stupidly easy maybe it’s a young adult novel maybe it’s a comedy autobiography . The point is even if the reading itself is easy, the act of reading is a different way of doing things, and you’re actually working on the ability to read itself your ability to concentrate your ability to follow along with the words while comprehending everything your ability to stay still in the place in which you read and not you want to look at your phone. Therefore, sitting down for the first time to try to read with a really hard book that you feel like you should be able to read it’s like going to the gym and putting on a weight that you feel should be able to lift. It doesn’t matter what you feel you should be able to do the reality is what you are able to do and there’s nothing wrong with working up to that level even if you used to read a lot before just like even if you used to go to the gym before and have some weight, if you haven’t done it in a while getting back to the habit will require building back up, it’s not about your intelligence. It’s not about what you can comprehend it’s about this is a new way of consuming information for you, and that requires working up to even if your body has the natural capacity.
